The gypsy woman will ask you questions and you must answer each one by choosing which virtue to follow. The virtues you choose will narrow down to one virtue that you choose above all others. This will determine your starting class and city.
Mage: Virtue is honesty. Starting city is moonglow.
Best ranged weapons: Sling and magic wand. Best melee weapons: Dagger. Best armour: Cloth.
Bard: Virtue is compassion. Starting city is Britain.
Best ranged weapons: Crossbow and magic wand. Best melee weapons: Sword. Best armour: Leather.
Fighter: Virtue is valor. Starting city Jhelom.
Best ranged weapons: Crossbow. Best melee weapons: Halberd, magic sword, axe +2. Best armour: Plate and magic chain.
Druid: Virtue is justice. Starting city is Yew.

Speak to the Seer, Hawkwind, in Castle Britain to know when you're ready to meditate at a shrine.
Each shrine needs to be meditated on for 3 cycles in order to achieve partial Avatarhood.
Make note of the runic letters that appear when meditating at each shrine. Translate each one to decipher the word.

Skull of Mondain: The fourth necessary item needed in conjunction with the book, candle, and bell. The skull is located at P'F" M'F when the moons are new, in the ocean between the Isle of The Abyss and Serpent's Hold. You can learn about the skull and it's location if you ask Jude in Minoc the right questions.
Need all 8 stones and combine the correct ones at the altar of truth, love, and courage.
The altars are located on level 8 of the Hythloth dungeon (see spirituality virtue for location).
Altar of Courage: located in the Northeastern end of the level. At the altar, press U and type stones. Use red, purple, orange, and white stones.
Altar of Love: From the ladder; East 2 tiles and North 2 tiles. At the altar, press U and type stones. Use yellow, green, orange, and white stones.
Altar of Truth: From the ladder; East 4 tiles and North 4 tiles. At the altar, press U and type stones. use blue, green, purple, and white stones.
You can't leave Hythloth from the secret entrance in Britain. The easiest way to leave is to use one the exits at one of the altars which will transport you to another dungeon. Then cast the X-it spell to leave.
Recruiting all 7 companions is necessary for becoming an 8 part Avatar.
The 1 companion you cannot recruit is the one that shares the same class as you.
The number of companions you can recruit is equal to your current level.
To recruit a character to your party ask join.
Mariah (mage): Located in Moonglow in the open field by the entrance.
Iolo (bard): Located in Britain in the Southeastern corner across the bridge.
Geoffrey (fighter): Located in Jhelom in the Southeast room in the inn.
Jaana (druid): Located in Yew by the fireplace in the forest North of the entrance.
Julia (tinker): Located in Minoc in the shelter for the poor.
Dupre (paladin): Located in Trinsic near the tap.
Shamino (ranger): Located in Skara Brae next to the altar.
Katrina (shepherd): Located in Magincia directly South of the bridge at the entrance.
Here is a list of additional important items that are not required for completing the game, but will help you in your journey:
Mystic Armour: In the Abyss, these along with magic chain and magic plate, is the only armour that can protect you. Sir Simon in Paws, reveals the location of the armour to you when you become an 8 part Avatar. A set of mystic armour is located in the center of Oak Grove in Empath Abbey.
Mystic Swords: Same as the mystic armour, the mystic swords in addtion to magic weapons, are the only weapons that work in the Abyss. When you are an 8 part Avatar, you can learn of their location from Lady Tessa in Paws. To find them, search the training hall in Serpent's Hold.
HMS Cape: An invaluable upgrade to the ship that doubles the ship's hull. It will help greatly with getting past the army of ships at the entrance to the Abyss. You can learn of its location from Lassorn in Serpent's Hold. Search the sea in the Cape of Heroes, just Southeast of the shrine of Honor. Precise location: N'H G'A.
Sextant: This item allows you to see your current coordinates. Very useful for knowing your exact location and following this guide. You can buy it from a guild shop, of which two exist: in Vesper and Buccaneer's Den. Vesper is located Southeast of Minoc, you can walk there, or sail to the shore by ship. Buccaneer's Den is located on a small island directly Northeast of Trinsic. When at a guild shop, ask the hidden option D to be offered the sextant. It cost 900gp. To use the sextant, input L when in the overworld.
Peer gems: These give you a map of your current surroundings. They are especially useful in dungeons. The peer spell serves the same purpose, but the gems allow non magic users to use them. They can only be bought at guild shops for 60gp each.
Magic keys: Keys let you open one of the many locked doors throughout the game. The open spell also does the same thing, but keys are for non magic users. They can be bought at guild shops for a set of 6 for 20gp. To unlock a door, input J to jimmy a lock. Although it may seem unethical to break into locked rooms, you do not lose virtue points for doing so.
As you descend to each level of the abyss, you must use the altar to reach the next level. The altar will ask you which virtue it's describing and require the correct stone.
Level 1: Honesty, Blue stone.
Level 2: Compassion, yellow stone.
Level 3: Valor, red stone.
Level 4: Justice, green stone.
Level 5: Sacrifice, orange stone.
Level 6: Honor, purple stone.
Level 7: Spirituality, white stone.
Level 8: Humility, black stone.
The codex of ultimate wisdom: The final altar will require the key of 3 parts, word of passage, and for you to be an 8 part Avatar. Answers to the following questions:
